Immediate Theatre at New Regents College

Posted on 6th Nov

Pupils were fortunate enough to participate in a 12 week project with Immediate Theatre. ‘Meet the Parents’ is Immediate Theatres innovative peer led education project that has delivered high quality SRE sessions to over 20,000 pupils in Hackney and Tower Hamlets.

The project aims to reduce teenage pregnancy rates and improve sexual health and relationship skills amongst young people. The sessions were led by trained local young parents using Drama as a stimulus to explore issues and engage young people in learning.

The trainers, led by Charmaine Humphrey from Immediate Theatre, were very impressed with New Regents College pupils and wrote:

The Young People are more than able to understand real life issues and situation, they give feedback in class and do not hesitate to get involved in group discussion. The pupils take on small roles as character in a theatrical class room play, acting out parenting situations and how to tackle them head on!

The young people had enthusiasm and energy. At times it felt like I was working with young professionals.

The listening, acting and reacting during the whole session was 100%.

Even the minority of the young people who never felt comfortable in performing found a way to eventually participate in some form.

I left feeling inspired by these young people. I felt if supported they could put on a piece or share a finished production.

It was really nice to work at New Regents College as part of Meet the Parents, which supported The One Wing Project - a set of workshops and transformational programmes aimed at personal and social development through creative expression.

The students embraced the creative expression sessions and took very well to the personal development themes of the workshops, it was really nice to see the students work out their personal and career goals and map out ways to reach their aims.

During both sessions, it was great to see the students work together on their final creative expressive pieces and I was very inspired by individual pieces where students shined bright, challenging perceptions and breaking down limitations.

I am truly grateful for the opportunity to lead on the delivery of my own workshops, as the experience has provided me growth and development which is priceless.

I always really enjoy my experience facilitating on Meet the Parents sessions and thank New Regents College for having me and look forward to working with them both in the future.

Thank-you to Immediate Theatre, Charmaine and all of the trainers. We look forward to working with them again.
