Nile Street Ground Breaking Ceremony

Posted on 8th Jun

Building work is now underway on the Nile Street site of New Regent’s College. This means that during 2018/2019 we should be able to move into our purpose built accommodation. This will include facilities for primary, lower secondary and KS4 learners. For the first time we will have state of the art facilities for the teaching of science, ICT, Art, Food and Physical Education. There will be a sports Hall and outside MUGA (Multi Use Games Area). The project is being funded by Hackney Council. Residential accommodation is being built above the school.

The Ground Breaking Ceremony was attended by The Mayor of Hackney, Philip Glanville and Deputy Mayor and Education Leader Cllr Anntoinette Bramble as well as Gordon Wescombe, Project Director from McLaren Construction.

From New Regent’s College, Richard Brown (Executive Head) and Sue Parillon (Head of School) attended with members of the Management Board. Mr Brown explained that New Regent’s mission statement is ‘Learning to succeed’, “We work with young people who for a variety of reasons, have so far been unsuccessful in mainstream schooling. We do not give up on them, but work with them to re-focus on their education. Many are then re-integrated into mainstream schools. For those that remain, especially aged 14-16, we aim to help them achieve the best possible exam outcomes.” Mr Brown thanked everyone involved in the construction project and praised Hackney Council “for supporting our vulnerable learners in this way”.

Mayor Glanville then took the special shovel that had been bought for the occasion and will later be engraved, and, dug the first piece of earth. We will now let the builders do their work but intend to arrange a visit for students to the construction site next year.
